Student Laptop - Basic Troubleshooting
Restart the Computer
• Step one is always Restart the Computer and see if the problem continues. Restarting allows the computer to clear its memory and start fresh.
• Use the power controls inside Windows to Restart.
• Only use the power button to restart if you are unable to get to the power controls.
• To use the power button, you may need to press and hold the button for 7 or 12 seconds, depending on the current state. Observe the power indicator light.
Check for Updates
• Microsoft sends out one large Windows Cumulative Update once a month and various application updates as they become available. I recommend checking for updates once a week, in case restarting does not trigger installation.
• From the Start menu, select the Software Center tile, or type Software and then select the Software Center.
• When the Software Center opens, select Updates from the menu on the left.
• If any updates are listed with a status of “Past due” click the Install All button to begin installation. This will take a while and you can continue to work while it downloads and installs.
• NOTE: If nothing seems to happen when Install All is selected, click on one update and then click the Install button. If you get an error message, please stop and notify your Tech Support of the error. The “Insufficient Permissions” error indicates incorrect settings that must be fixed by the TSR.
Clear Drive Space
• Clear browsing data in Google Chrome. From the main menu, select More Tools > Clear browsing data. Change the time range to “All time” and click Clear data.
• Open the Folder Manager and go to the Downloads folder. Delete any files that you no longer need.
AND
• Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and select Empty Recycle Bin.
